DEC. 24 – Every year the Tracy family likes to buy a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Most years we end up with a 5-foot tree that might have one good side. The rest of the tree is missing branches or has plenty of bald spots, which we just face towards the wall and cover up with large ugly ornaments that my sisters and I made when we were young (ie: that popcorn Snowman ornament my parents never threw away, even though the popcorn "disappeared" 20 years ago thanks to the family dog, etc.) Regardless, every year we get a good laugh about our Charlie Brown tree. My parents usually get the tree weeks before Christmas, but this year wanted to wait for me to return from Germany so we could find it together as a family. Well, Christmas Eve afternoon rolled around, and we still hadn't gotten a tree! So in a panic, we drive for an hour around eastern Pennsylvania yesterday. All Christmas tree places were either sold out or closed. (My parents' house is in what we like to call East Bumblef$%&, after all, so it's slim pickin's.) We finally ended up at a Home Depot. Unfortunately, they were out of trees, but did have a few shrubs for sale – and as it turns out, all shrubs were on sale for 75% off! So Home Depot very nearly paid us to take this half-of-a-Christmas-tree shrubbery home with us, and this might be my favorite Charlie Brown "tree" yet!!
It was pretty hilarious trying to fit as many ornaments as possible on those 10 weak little branches, but I'm happy our Tracy family tradition was kept alive and well this year. Happy Holidays, everyone!
